Noonan, Murphy ridicule Republican Party: "It's Over"

Posted September 3rd, 2008 by RonShimshock

Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan and Republican consultant Mike Murphy were on the air today with NBC's Chuck Todd.  After the segment ended, their microphones were still live, and caught a scathing discussion between the three of them about the Republican ticket's chances:

Both Noonan and Murphy ridiculed the choice of Sarah Palin as VP.  Noonan stated, "it's over" (assuming the chances of the Republicans winning this fall), and then commented about Palin: "the most qualified? No. I think they went for this — excuse me — political bullsh** about narratives. Every time Republicans do that... because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at and they blow it."

Murphy noted toward the end of the video: "The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical."

Peggy Noonan responds to open-mic story

In the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan has responded to the open-mic story. She states the video clip on the Internet is truncated, and appears to show her saying she believes the McCain campaign is "over". Noonan says she did not say this, and does not think it.

In fact, Noonan says the topic of discussion at the time was Republican party leadership, and how they assume "whatever the base of the Republican party thinks is what America thinks." She goes on to say the following:

Quote:
"I made the case that this is no longer true, that party leaders seem to me stuck in the assumptions of 1988 and 1994, the assumptions that reigned when they were young and coming up. 'The first lesson they learned is the one they remember,' I said to [NBC's Chuck] Todd -- and I'm pretty certain that is a direct quote. But, I argued, that's over, those assumptions are yesterday, the party can no longer assume that its base is utterly in line with the thinking of the American people. And when I said, 'It's over!' -- and I said it more than once -- that is what I was referring to.
